Before the work starts
- Describe the job clearly: what, where, when, and any materials.
- Ask for a site visit or photos if the job is not simple.
- Agree on the price, what it includes, and payment terms in writing (a text message is better than nothing).
- Agree on who buys materials and how receipts are shared.
- Agree on start date, working hours and expected finish.
- Ask how the worker handles safety (ladders, electricity, heights).
During and after
- Check progress at agreed points.
- Pay according to what you agreed — avoid paying everything in advance.
- Keep photos of the finished work.
